چکیده

Fetal heart rate estimated from fetal electrocardiogram (fECG), recorded via electrodes placed on the maternal abdomen, represents an important tool in evaluating fetal distress and diagnosing fetal diseases. However, due to poor signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the fECG, the abdominal fECG analysis is still very difficult, despite of significant advances in technology and in the field of electrocardiography. In this study we propose a new efficient method for estimating the fetal QRS (fQRS) locations from abdominal signals (ADS). Thus, the method consists of several steps: pre-processing of the ADS in order to remove different types of noise including baseline wander and power-line interference (PLI); maternal electrocardiogram (mECG) cancellation using a simple template subtraction procedure and robust fQRS detections by employing empirical mode decomposition (EMD). This methodology was validated on real fECG recordings and its performance was compared with those obtained by two methods described in the literature. Four performance measures were defined: sensitivity (Se), positive predictive value (PPV), accuracy (ACC) and F1-measure. The proposed method overcomes the performance of the other two techniques described in literature

An Effective Method for Detecting Y-chromosome Specific Sequences of Circulating Fetal DNA in Maternal Plasma During the First-trimester

Background and Aims: New advances in the use of cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) in maternal plasma of pregnant women has provided the possibility of applying cffDNA in prenatal diagnosis as a non-invasive method. One of the applications of prenatal diagnosis is fetal gender determination. Early prenatal determination of fetal sex is required for pregnant women at risk of X-linked and some endocrin...

Evaluation of an improved algorithm for fetal QRS detection

In the area of fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring, different sizes and multifunctional ultrasound based systems are used. All these systems are invasive but cannot be use for long term monitoring applications. The objective of this paper is to evaluate a fetal peak detection algorithm which is applied to all the abdominal channels without threshold (amplitude threshold free) that is threshold in...

Fragmented QRS and prediction of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation episodes

OBJECTIVE Prior studies have demonstrated the relationship between cardiovascular diseases and fragmented QRS (fQRS). fQRS was also associated with ventricular arrhythmias. Our objective was to find out the relationship between fQRS and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). METHOD A total of 301 patients without overt structural heart disease were prospectively included in the study. Patients...

Comparison between fragmented QRS and Q waves in myocardial scar detection using myocardial perfusion single photon emission computed tomography.

BACKGROUND Accurate diagnosis of myocardial infarction (MI) is of paramount importance in patient management, which necessitates the development of efficient and accurate diagnostic methods. Q wave is not present in all patients with MI, and its prevalence is declining. Recently, fragmented QRS (fQRS) complex has been introduced as a marker of prior MI. AIM To investigate diagnostic value of ...

Correlation between QRS Complex Changes and Cardiac Iron Overload in Beta Thalassemia Major Patients Using T2*MRI

Background and purpose: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a costly method to assess cardiac iron overload. The presence of fragmented QRS (fQRS) indicates changes due to iron overload in cardiac tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between fQRS and cardiac iron overload using cardiac MRI in patients with β-thalassemia major (β-TM). Materials and methods: This...
